Sources on the ground in the institution say the Student’s Union President, Daniel Joseph, early this morning mobilized support for Agi and led a protest march in the institution which drew the ire of a section of the students believed to be behind Akpagu. As the SUG President drove in his car with other officials on campus, drumming up support for Agi, a group of students followed behind and mounting tension is thought to have come to the surface when he was attacked as he attempted to address the students and journalists present. It took the arrival of mobile policemen, drafted to the scene before the SUG President was let off the hook. Africa Independent Television, AIT, brought to the scene to cover the protest, lost equipment.
We also gathered that while the policemen tried to arrest and take him away, students at the scene prevented this from happening, whisking him away to an unknown destination on campus instead. Lectures have been hurriedly suspended and the V-C and the bursar are said to be outside the institution. Attempts to speak with either of them was impossible at the time of going to press. It is also uncertain, if the V-C’s camp is hell bent on removing the bursar, even though the handwriting is clear. Offices remain shut and there is heavy security presence in the institution.
It is suspected that the fued between this two principal officers of the institution is tied to the ascension politics that played out before Akpagu became V-C of the institution. Sources in Unical swear the bursar supported another candidate against Akpagu and a few persons within and outside the institution who have the V-C ears have quickly pointed to this in an orchestrated campaign to oust the bursar from his position, an assumption the Akpagu camp maintain is untrue.
