Sources within the political camp of former Secretary of Nigeria’s National Planning Commission, Fidelis Ugbo, have finally confirmed to www.calitown.com that the Labour Party is where Ugbo is set to actualise his ambition of becoming governor of Cross River State, after his much publicised romance with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, broke down.
“Late Tuesday night, Ugbo completed and submitted the Labour Party’s substitution form as the gubernatorial candidate of the party”, the source called in to say. His substitution became necessary after Goddy Jedy Agba who had earlier indicated interest in running on the party’s platform, abandoned that ambition, citing among other reasons, his physician’s advice and the need to make a personal sacrifice for the good of Cross River.
It was also revealed that, former CR Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Nella Andem Ewa, was nominated by the Labour Party to run on the same ticket as Ugbo’s deputy. This development has set the stage for an unprecedented political showdown between the PDP and LP, a scenerio that has for long been alien to a one party Cross River State.
Political watchers are already placing bets that the elections in a few weeks time may not present the PDP with a clean sweep of all positions, considering too that they have been high-profile members of the party defecting to mostly the LP, to actualise political ambitions that many of them accuse state governor, Liyel Imoke, of trying to scuttle.
