Tanker Crushes Car In Akamkpa

Barely a few weeks after calitown.com pointed relevant authorities and commuters to the danger a bad portion of the Calabar/Ikom Highway poses, an accident on that particular portion a couple of days ago, has proved calitown.com right.
The portion, lying in front of the Juniorate in Iwuru, Akamkpa LGA and consisting of several deep gullies, was responsible for the accident involving a tanker loaded with petrol and a Volkswagen sedan with registration no XA 583-AFM Eye witnesses say in the course of trying to negotiate the gullies, the tanker tripped over and fell on the sedan, discharging in the process her 33, 000 litres of petrol that villagers were to happy taking turns to fetch. The situation is reported to have created a gridlock that left commuters stranded for several hours. It also put the lives of students of the Juniorate and property at risk.

One villager who spoke to calitown.com pointed out that, “this place has become so bad that we fear that if something is not done to repair this place, more people will unfortunately lose their lives here”. Another villager was quick to point to the fact that, “this whole place had just one large pot hole, but because nothing was done about it, it has developed into several very deep and life threatening gullies that resulted in the accident”. It remains to be seen if government will make do her promise of fixing the road before m,ore lives are lost.

As a matter of urgency, the state government should quickly mobilise the Highway Mentainance Agency to at least fill the portion with hard core while they finalise the proper repairs of the road after the rains. That portion of the road will need a culvert, the earlier the better before many will cry over spilt milk.
