The prices of essential services in Calabar have shot up as the city is presently playing host to the 2013 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, with conference participants reported to be close to 10, 000.
Hotel rates have skyrocketed just like taxi fares, the price of food and drinks and other services. Calitown.com investigations show that hotels rooms that normally go for between N5, 000 to N8, 000 are going for N12, 000 or N15, 000. Taxis are charging an average of N3, 000 for one hour as against the normal N1, 000 an hour charge. Most hoteliers are however pointing calitown.com to the fact that the conference period is for them a booming business period that can quickly be exploited to fill in for perceived long business barren periods that might follow.
At the venue of the conference, the Tinapa Business Resort, Calabar, lawyers are everywhere and locals have cashed in, selling food and drinks at prices that are considered way off the mark in Calabar. One woman selling oranges, minerals and pure water at the entrance to the venue told calitown .com that, “the thing dey like for Christmas time when the Carnival dey bring plenty people”, an apparent reference to the upsurge in the number of visitors arriving Calabar to take part in the Christmas festivities.
The conference with the theme, “Law, Leadership and Challenges of Nationhood in the 21st Century’’, will draw to a close on the 30th of August, 2013.
