While so much hype surrounded the 2015 Mr & Ms. Leboku peagent, a competition where the star prize is a brand new car for the winner in both categories, www.calitown.com can authoritatively report that violence, early Sunday morning, August 23, 2015, threatened this year’s edition of the competition.
Trouble is said to have started when the judges announced the Ms. Leboku winner, Patience Okoi Eno, a 23 year old Cross River State University of Technology, CRUTECH student. A section of the spectators suddenly disagreed with the decision of the judges and went violent, ripping off stage decorations, hauling plastic chairs on spectators and viciously attacking the organizer of the peagent, Debra Rich.
While spectators ran for their lives, mayhem was unleashed on those without quick feet, injuring several spectators and vandalizing property at the new Obol Ubi Ujong auditorium, venue of the event.
Security reinforcements were called in as people ran for their lives. At the time of filing this report, one arrest has been made with a past winner of the Mr Leboku event, arrested and detained by the police in Ugep. Sources on the ground in Ugep informed www.calitown.com that this unfortunate situation may have been averted if proper security arrangements were put in place.
