In a swift reaction to a news report carried in one Calabar-based online news site, purporting that Mfawa Ofegobi, Member representing Yakurr I State constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, involved in an accident a couple of days ago may have been over speeding, the law maker has told calitown.com, upon enquiries, that he was not speeding at the time of the accident.
Ofegobi particularly lamented that the report which portrayed him as an irresponsible driver was an unfortunate exercise in the practice of journalism. The report which read in part that, “the man (Ofegobi) was driving at top speed and he did not even slow down at the sharp bend which even those learning to drive know they have to be careful to avoid colliding with others”, was further described by him as a clear case of very biased reporting, considering that not one reporter from the newspaper was at the scene of the accident.
While the site may have relied on second hand information in reporting the accident, the lawmaker was of the opinion that if the site views the life of any individual as sacrosanct, it will avoid insensitive reporting at a critical moment like this and concentrate instead on disseminating information accurately.
The member however said he and his entire family are praying for the speedy recovery of the driver affected in the accident while also thanking all those who have shown solidarity during this period.
