Today’s church service in one church in Calabar, Cross River State, was shunned by several members of the church after it was suspected that the resident pastor (name withheld) had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 14-year old female member of the church.
Sources in the church, located at Ikot Nkebre, Eight Miles, Calabar, informed www.calitown.com that “after the suspect’s wife left for a meeting yesterday (Saturday), the man cunningly invited the unsuspecting girl to his house to help out with some chores. After she got there, the man did what he did and we are quite disappointed. The man’s wife is very disappointed even as people have been begging that the girl’s family should not report the matter to the police. Because of this action, our church recorded less than 50 people in service today; l mean a church that normally records attendance of more than 150 people on Sundays.”
Our source continues, “…we don’t know what this world is coming to. One of the girls in the church had even alleged sometime ago that he took her to Uyo, under the pretext that he was going to help secure admission for her at the University of Uyo. When they got there, he checked into a hotel and booked only one room. Imagine that he also forced himself on this unsuspecting girl and slept with her. Several entreaties were made by him and some members of the church to the girl’s parents to please forgive him and let the matter die; but see what has now happened. Maybe if we reported the matter to the police, he would have been accosted and this thing that just happened would have been averted”, www.calitown.com was further informed.
At press time, the pastor’s number could not be reached for reactions, but we were reliably informed that some elders of Ikot Nkebre community were engaging him, ” he knows the calls and text messages he has been inundated with since this thing happened and may have deliberately turned off his phone”, our source concluded.
