On the heels of Tuesday’s landslide that buried a family of six, calitown.com can reveal that the Cross River State Government will in the next couple of weeks commence the complete clearing out of the area to forestal further damage to lives and property.
Government through the Ministry of Lands, informed that while the landslide was regretted, it is on record however that it had severally warned people to stay off the said area because of consequences like Tuesday’s incident. Specifically it went on to say that the occupants of the area were “illegal occupants” and that most of those who claimed to have bought plot of land there had either been defrauded or were lieing.
In response to government’s planned clear out of the area, one resident told calitown.com that, “we will only leave this place if government gives us new plots of land”. It is a position that has not gone down well with authorities at the Calabar Municipal Council. A source at the council revealed to us that, “these people who are saying they will not leave that place until alternative plots of land are allocated them are not even Cross Riverians. It is fraudulent and confrontational for them to give conditions when government has issued instructions”, the source concluded.
It is however unknown when government will commence the clear out of this disaster prone area.
