The Cross River State Government has dissolved the Cross River State Council of Chiefs.
In a press release made public not too long ago and signed by Anthony Owan Enoh, Secretary to the Cross River State Government, the release says the state governor “…approved the immediate dissolution of the State Council of Chiefs. The action is pursuant to Section 4(1) of the Council of Chiefs Law, Cap. 1, Laws of Cross River State, 2004. Accordingly, the tenure of the Council has elapsed.”
Recall that the Cross River State House of Assembly, recently passed a resolution, calling on government to dissolve the Council, pointing out that while a Chairman of the Council is supposed, by law, to serve for two years, HRM. Etim Okon Edet, paramount ruler of Bakassi LGA, who has now been removed as Chairman, occupied the position for more than ten years, to the detriment of a rotational formula backed by law.
We were informed that the state government may have decided to move against the royal father after he flouted the instructions of state governor, Bassey Edet Otu, even barring the governor’s appointee from performing legitimate functions.
