Palpable fear has descended on members of the Cross River State House of Assembly and their wives following the abduction of Nseobong Ofem, wife of Nelson Ofem, the member representing Yakkur I State Constituency.
The abductors according to a reliable source, on Thursday evening followed the woman who drove in her husband’s SUV to Ikot Ishie to visit her mother and after seeing her she went to where she parked the car but as she made to step into her car, she was forced by the abductors into their car which they parked behind her own
“Those who escorted her to the car raised alarm but the boys sped off with her to an unknown destination” our source said.
According to her, the hoodlums later contacted her husband to announce to him that they are with his wife but did not demand for a ransom.
We also gathered that because of the unfortunate situation, many Assemblymen and their wives did not step out of their quarters throughout Friday for fear of being abducted.
“Last time the boys abducted five Igbo traders within the same period so we are afraid of going out for fear of being kidnapped. They may have earmarked a number of us for abduction”, our source who is a wife of an Assembly member said.
Ofem who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Information when contacted said he was too dazed to make any statement
Irene Ugbo, the Cross River Police Command spokesperson said the police was informed of the abduction soon after the incident happened and ‘we blocked all the exit points from the city but could not get them”.
She said she is confident that by Monday the hoodlums may have been tracked to their hideout in order to effect the woman’s release.
