The senator representing Cross River North Senatorial district, Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, has described the outcome of last Saturday’s local government council elections as an affront on democracy.
Reacting in a statement, after Ekong Boco, Chairman of the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission, CROSIEC, declared three women and 15 men, all of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as elected winners of the polls, Jarigbe was emphatic that the result apart from being an affront on democracy, suppresses competition, disenfranchises the electorate, and erodes the very essence of a free and fair electoral process.
“I make this statement not just as a senator but as a voice for true democracy,”
Meanwhile, at the presentation of certificates of return to the 18 elected chairmen, Boco, the CROSIEC chairman, emphasised the importance of fulfilling campaign promises and the responsibilities associated with local government councils in democratic governance and urged all of them to do more than enough in the interest of their people. The 18 chairmen and 196 councillors are all of the APC. No other party won in the elections.
