Eteng Jonah Williams, senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial district in Nigeria’s senate, has expressed his admiration for child gymnast, Dida Ubi Ettah, who shone brightly at the just concluded 2024 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
Williams who received 9-year old Dida and her team, after she snapped up one gold medal, two silver medals, and one bronze in gymnastics, said the gymnast captured his attention and that of Nigerians with her remarkable accomplishments.
He was exceptionally elated that Dida, who is from his native Mkpani community in Yakurr LGA, Cross River State, was competing against some of the country’s most promising young athletes, showcasing her exceptional skills, with her display of athleticism and poise at such a young age, marking her as one of the country’s top future prospects.
“It is incredibly exciting to meet Dida, someone who is on the path to greatness at such a young age. Many of the world’s greatest athletes were discovered early in life, and I see that same potential in her. It’s inspiring, not just for Cross River State, but for the entire country”, Williams said.
Williams, an advocate for youth development, visibly moved by Dida’s story, further acknowledged the importance of supporting young athletes to help them reach their full potential and made a heartfelt commitment to support Dida’s continued development, particularly in her efforts to compete internationally.
His office, he added, will explore opportunities to help Dida participate in international competitions, where she will compete against the world’s best gymnasts, paving the way for possible record-breaking performances.
Anthony Asuquo, respected Nigerian gymnastics coach, present at the visit said: “This is just the beginning for Dida. With the right support, there is no limit to what she can achieve. We are grateful for Senator Williams’ interest and commitment to helping her pursue her dreams.”
