Cross River State produced the best Mathematics student at the just concluded National Junior Engineers Technicians and Scientists (JETS) Competition, held recently at the Federal Ministry of Education Conference Centre, Abuja. The State was represented by seven students at the competition, four of who participated in the inter-state quiz competition between ten states, where Cross River State tied with Ondo state and the Federal Capital territory (FCT) to progress to the first stage and semi-finals respectively.
In the Individual Subject Category, Joshua Jacob of Government Secondary School, Uwanse, won a gold medal in Mathematics and a silver medal in Physics, while Bill Utsu, and Wisdom Warrie of Government Technical College, Mayne Avenue, won a silver medal in the National Team Project. The Free Choice Project Category, saw Catherine Joseph of Lightway Academy, winning the bronze medal.
Receiving the Cross River State JETS Team at the Education Board grounds, Michael Ani Secretariat Complex, Calabar, the Executive Secretary, Technical Education Board, Margaret Ene-Ita, lauded the Imoke-led administration’s resolve to improve the educational standards of Schools across the State. She also thanked the Cross River JETS club for making the State proud, urging them to do even better in subsequent editions.
Responding, the coordinator of the State’s JETS team, Mr. Eyo Usang Ukpong thanked the Government for providing the team with the resources to showcase the huge potentials hidden in the students.
“I am very delighted to be the leader of this team that has made the State proud nationally. There are hidden talents in every child and We need to harness these potentials to give these children the opportunity to do even better. I want to use this opportunity to implore the Government and private organizations to scout for such talents, as this would make Nigeria a better place scientifically and technologically”, he added. High point of the event was the presentation of medals to winners, where Cross River State, won a total of five (5) medals at the 2014 Edition of the National JETS Competition.
