The police in Cross River State says there was no gun attack on top cop, Essien Efoli, a Superintendent of Police, SP, and Commander, Operation Restore Peace, CRS, an elite corps of security personnel, charged with the responsibility of confronting the mounting security challenges presently being experienced in the state.
Irene Ugbo, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, CRS, in a signed statement circulated late Monday afternoon, advised “members of the public to disregard news currently trending on social media that SP Essien Efoli was attacked.” The statement described this piece of information as being “subversive”. Measures she added, “are being taken to review the source of this obnoxious information intended to spread fear and panic.”
“Consequent upon this, the Police Command in CRS, warns respective social media and blogging platforms to always cross-check or vet facts from established police authorities instead of spreading unverified, doubtful and false information.”
The statement further advised residents “to continue to support the police and other sister security agencies in the provision of genuine and actionable intelligence along Ikom/Calabar highway, especially the communities in Biase/Akamkpa LGA and its environs.”
Recall that it was widely reported on several Cross River-related online platforms and news sites (not www.calitown.com) that Efoli, was attacked somewhere in Biase LGA on the Calabar/Ikom highway, by persons suspected to be behind an unending series of deadly gun attacks and abductions presently being experienced on this stretch of road.
