Several residents of Mbukpa, Adak Uko and Ambo streets in Calabar South, Cross River State, have remained stunned after a gang of robbers, spent the wee hours of Tuesday, specifically robbing them of cooked food, foodstuff and cash.
Victims who have elected to remain anonymous informed www.calitown.com over the telephone that the operation began a few minutes after 2:00 a.m. when several burglary proofs were breached and gang members forcefully entered homes and carted away “pots of cooked soup, garri, yams, plantain and any other thing that can be eaten”.
The robbers, we were further informed, speaking in the local Efik dialect, spelt out clear instructions, during the extensive siege on the areas that victims must co-operate and not raise any alarm that may attract the attention of policemen stationed at the nearby Mbukpa police station in the area.
“As they entered houses in turns, gang members made straight for the kitchen, opened pots, checked what was cooked and turned same into some food containers that they came with. I willingly gave up the pot of soup my wife made that evening, gave them the raw rice and beans we had in the house and the only N5,000 that we had. I had to cooperate because they were deadly and desperate, but I thank God that our lives were spared”, a source told us.
Police sources in Mbukpa informed us that they were alerted about the robbery after it had ended, but still combed the entire area as a direct response to the incident.
