There is a storm brewing in the office of the Cross River State Accountant-General, sources within the office who informed www.calitown.com are insisting. The storm we gather is brewing around an unconfirmed N197 million, believed to have been discovered in a bank in Calabar and linked to a certain staff of the office(name withheld).
Additional information gathered from sources indicate that the staff may have cornered the huge cache of cash while discharging his office functions. That function which primarily revolves around the clearing and payment of government cheques into government’s accounts is thought to have been manipulated into a situation where over a period of time, some of the cheques landed in the staff’s personal account. The whistle on this anomaly is said to have been internally blown in the AG’s office by a few eagle-eyed staff, warranting a subtle investigation. However, when the staff was accosted, sources say the staff realising that the die on his loot may have been cast, has resorted to threats of blowing open a can of worms surrounding sharp financial practices within the AG’s office, even threatening to rope the AG into deals that may have taken place under the financial radar.
So far, some staff of the office are thought to have sent Gov. Liyel Imoke text messages, alerting him to the ugly situation. While attempts to speak with the AG on the matter were unsuccessful, it is suspected that more can of worms will be thrown up in the days ahead.
