A former chairmanship aspirant for the local council seat in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State, billed to hold on the 21st of September, 2013, one Winifred Ikpabi, has dragged the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission, CROSIEC, as well as one Edith Amadi, to court.
In suit HUG/31/2013, filed at the High Court, Ugep, Ikpabi seeks to challenge the nomination of Amadi as the chairmanship candidate of the PDP in Abi LGA, praying that the court stands down the party’s decision to let Amadi fly her flag in the said polls on the grounds that Amadi’s declaration of age puts her below the age for contesting the LG election in CRS.
She further pleads that the court should declare her the party’s candidate and cause the PDP to forward her name to CROSIEC to enable her stand election into the Abi LGA top job.
But in a reaction to this prayer, sources who spoke to calitown.com on conditions of anonymity, have informed that Ikpabi in the first instance was not in contention when the Abi PDP Caucus threw its weight behind Amadi. One source fingers a retired female permanent secretary of Abi extraction as giving Ikpabi the impetus to approach the court. The retired permanent secretary it was further revealed, has taken her ‘fight’ with the governor’s Chief of Staff, rumoured to be behind Amadi’s emergence, to the next level. “Even when Amadi was first presented to the governor’s wife, this woman did everything possible to scuttle the emergence of Amadi but remarkably the Chief of Staff stood his grounds”, the source said.
While all of this transpires, yet another source said that, “the emergence of Amadi had to be backed by the COS because it is the turn of his ward to produce the chairman and it would be unthinkable politically for someone without his backing to emerge from that ward and that is why the COS and the former permanent secretary, who is not from that ward, but wanted to put forth a candidate from that ward are wrestling”.
The days ahead will prove if Ikpabi succeeds in her attempt to throw out amadi.
