Plans are nearing completion for the commencement of a 42km world class marathon in Calabar, Cross River state, to rival renowned marathons the world over.
The state’s tourism bureau has already penned an agreement with two firms, Active Sports Nigeria International and Connect Marketing Services, to stage the event.
Michael Williams, Managing Director of the CRS Tourism Bureau, says the race will attract notable international athletes as well as attract visitors to Calabar while also promoting the region’s rich cultural history.
His words, “It will also promote the rich heritage of the state and present a veritable platform for sponsors on their products and brands, hence creating greater interest in the state as a lifestyle sports and destination,” .
State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Ugbe, also present at the penning ceremony, assured government support for the race. He was clear that “government will provide the necessary logistics, medical support and crowd control through liaising with the Nigerian Police. It will be solely funded by the private sector, which is why we are partnering.”
Easter this year is the target date for the commencement of the marathon.
